ALMOST DONE WITH TIA LOLA

The students are almost done with their first chapter book! Tia Lola is a funny character. She is trying to learn English, she paints the house purple, and cooks the best meals ever. This book is about family, friendships, changes, and love. Be  ready for the final test this Friday!!!!

WRITING & GRAMMAR

Students are learning to be good writers! Their Writer's Notebook is starting to fill up quickly. They recently worked on their "I Wonder List." So many ideas!!! In our class, grammar plays a big role in student's writing. So far, they've learned the different types of sentences, how to identify the subject, predicate, and verb, and recently compound sentences.

Remember the conjunctions:  F A N B O Y S!
(For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So)

They are used in a compound sentence to connect two complete thoughts. Also, they are preceded by a comma.

OUR FIRST CHAPTER BOOK TOGETHER

Today we started reading our first chapter book, "How Tia Lola Came to Stay." This a different book because it is written in two languages (English and Spanish). The students learned that the character, Tia Lola AND one of our students, Kendall is from the Dominican Republic.

In Chapter 1, we find out that Tia Lola is helping Miguel and Juanita's mother who is recently divorced. We had a discussion about how different all families are. It was nice to hear them open up and share their feelings.

Everyone had a chance to read with their partners. As I was walking around, I was so proud of them!! They really DO take reading serious!!!

Pay Day finally came!!!

Our students were so excited to receive their first paycheck for their classroom jobs. It was fun watching the Payroll Clerks make the checks and the Bank Tellers process their deposits. Students were busy updating their check registers and were calculating what bills they had to pay. Time ran out, but next week they will be paying their rent (table & chair) and fines for behavior issues last week.
