Personification thanks to Gloria Estefan

The students are learning about PERSONIFICATION. Today, I read them, "The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog," by Gloria Estefan. There were a lot of talking animals in this book! Mrs. Ryan is covering GLORIA ESTEFAN'S Biography. Who would have know that she was not only a singer, but an author too!

This story also taught students that we are not failures! We all have something we're good at. Noelle finally figured out his strengths and helped his friends through some tough times. This song, "Been Wishin'" was written by Gloria Estefan and it comes with the book. Check it out:

Check out this video teaching you Figurative Language!

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

Today I read "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" by William Steig. Everyone was so anxious to hear what was going to happen next. They were predicting, looking for picture clues, and answering comprehension questions. At the end, we discussed the figurative language they heard in the story. For example, "It was flaming red, shiny, and perfectly round, like a marble." Here, Sylvester is comparing his rock to a marble. This is a SIMILE because there is a comparison of two things and the word "like" is used.

ALMOST DONE WITH TIA LOLA

The students are almost done with their first chapter book! Tia Lola is a funny character. She is trying to learn English, she paints the house purple, and cooks the best meals ever. This book is about family, friendships, changes, and love. Be  ready for the final test this Friday!!!!

OUR FIRST CHAPTER BOOK TOGETHER

Today we started reading our first chapter book, "How Tia Lola Came to Stay." This a different book because it is written in two languages (English and Spanish). The students learned that the character, Tia Lola AND one of our students, Kendall is from the Dominican Republic.

In Chapter 1, we find out that Tia Lola is helping Miguel and Juanita's mother who is recently divorced. We had a discussion about how different all families are. It was nice to hear them open up and share their feelings.

Everyone had a chance to read with their partners. As I was walking around, I was so proud of them!! They really DO take reading serious!!!
